Episode 10: Eastern VS Western Meadowlark ID – Voice of the Wild
This is Illinois Extension’s Voice of the Wild. In this episode we’ll learn the difference between the eastern and Western meadowlarks, both of which can be found in Illinois. The Western meadowlark is only occasional in the state, while the Eastern meadowlark is common throughout. The visual differences between the two birds are very subtle. The Western meadowlark has less white in its tail, less distinct markings on its head, and is paler on its sides. But these are variable traits and the most reliable way to tell the birds apart is by their voice. Luckily they're very vocal birds.
Here’s the Eastern’s song, which is smooth and simple,
And now the Western’s, which is more rich and complex.
the Eastern’s call, which is harsh and buzzing,
And the Western’s, which is more resonant.
The Eastern’s song and call together
And now the Western’s
